Score: 9
crossroads in the sky

"Fairly enjoyable."

date: May 9, 2008

I'm sorry to say, though, that I found the voice acting nearly unbearably bad. I can understand that they were most likely intentionally stilted, but there is a way to do that, and a way not to. This sounded just way to forced and it made me uncomfortable.

The animation was too tweeny, I found, as well. Twens are great but they should be used more as a crutch than as a full on method of movement. These were a little too stiff, and a little too abundant.

The imagery and 'cinematography' was breathtaking and gorgeous though, and very easily appreciated.

I loved the music, and it really helped carry the atmosphere, which was much needed as the voice acting was killing it.

As someone else said, this is very poetic, but I'm certain it was supposed to be, and I don't see why you would ever mark it down for doing what it was intending to do, so in all honestly I loved that poetic aspect.

Overall it was a very enjoyable work.

Irod Bad!

"Eh. Not my bag."

I didn't find this funny in the least. I don't think there was a single joke in there, just you making weird voices and recounting the story in a somewhat accurate manner. It almost sounded you like just read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia after you took some Speed. However, I won't hold that against you because humour is left to taste really.

I'm basing the score entirely on the technical aspects here, in an effort to be fair. The sound quality was passable, but it crackled here and there. The art was ok, though your linework was very messy and often stole my attention. The animation went from pretty good in some segments to stiff with like no inbetweens in others, which got annoying. Also some of the 'scene' transitions were a little too abrupt and didn't flow well with the narration.

This could have worked out to a higher score, perhaps, if I enjoyed the humour, but the technical aspects alone earn you a 6.

Bad Baby

"This certainly was different."

submission: Bad Baby

The whole absurd assortment of strange scenes schtick has been really played out, and has become tired and uninteresting.

Still, this had so much more going for it beyond that. It broke all the colour theory rules I know, and yet still seemed to follow them all. I can't stress enough how I loved the colours. On top of that the animation was very smooth and surreal feeling. The movements all worked, and yet felt so detached from what I would expect. The sounds fit it all quite well and pushed the piece along nicely.

Fantastic work.

2 - The Story of Khale

"Well it was great."

date: May 9, 2008

But you really, REALLY need to work on three things.

Sound mixing/design/editing is the first. Your sounds effects were really unruly and so jarring and distracting. Sounds didn't flow or blend in with the cartoon at all. They were too loud for the most part and totally took the attention off the cartoon itself.

Second is the voice acting. It was pretty good, but all the characters sounded sort of clipped in robotic when their lines drew to a close. Maybe they were cut a little short in the editing process, I don't know. You really have to give some time for the things said to set in though, otherwise people are going to be thinking about what was just said and will miss what's happening on screen.

Third, and this was the big annoyance from me, is all your scene transitions and cuts were very, very abrupt. I couldn't keep up with the info being tossed at me. You have this very detailed setting where there is to much to take in, but I kept missing it because the scene would suddenly change. The rhythm seemed quite off.

All the parts are there. Great world, Great characters. Fantastic, smooth, well timed animation. Brilliant artwork. A good story it seems. You just need to work hard to bring it all together in one smooth piece. Right now all these things seem disconnected from each other and it's preventing you from having that professional polished feel, which I think you really good have.

So I'm giving you 9, because all the work individually is great. Just needs a little more solid vision. Do you storyboard and set up lengths and timings in the storyboard? I've always found that really helps keep those transitions with a strong rhythm.

Author's Response:

Thank you very much, excellent critique! I have come to realize most of these problems, but you explained them very well and I definitely understand them better and where I need to go from here. The editing timing was a tough decision. I had a lot I needed to show, but timing things to music can be a blessing and a curse. I'll keep tweaking it, but there's only so much slack the rhythm of the music can give.

THANK YOU

"Lovely."

It wasn't the most well drawn or the most well animated, and the story was pretty much the usual fable fair, but it all just went together so well. Very cute, and nice composition in all the shots.

I'd be crazy to not give this ten despite it's shortcomings.

Yep. Pretty damn good. I would normally critique the technical aspects of this submission, but it seems far too irrelevant to bother.

Good show, friend, good show.

It was simple and there wasn't a whole lot there, but I loved it all the same. Really love that you wrote your own music too. You could really hear that Beetlejuice influence though, haha. Very similar.

Honestly, I don't have any specific complaints, just work on making it feel more complete, I guess. Yeah I know that's hard to do haha.
